Whether you’re setting out to capture a few data points on a department scheduled for reset, conducting a full store survey in preparation for a remodel or setting up a routine store conditions audit, preparation is key. You owe it to yourself to consider the who, what, how and why of field information capture before embarking on a project. Here are the Top 10 Best Practices for conducting retail survey projects:

  1. Establish clear objects – What needs to be captured & why? What does success look like?
  2. Identify the key stakeholders – Who and how specifically will each participant use the information captured.
  3. Map the process, data standards (terminology, measurement units, photo frames & drawing specs) and secure stakeholder buy in.
  4. Create a survey pilot and capture data, photos and drawings from a test store.
  5. Review and share pilot results with stakeholders – make necessary revisions to the capture model.
  6. Develop a playbook outlining the objectives, survey process, order of events etc.
  7. Set-up a schedule and release a field communication document outlining timelines, FAQ’s and contact information.
  8. Recruit a team of surveyors with an experience level consistent with the nature of information that needs to be captured.
  9. Set-up a group-training event or video to reinforce key aspects of the survey process, watch outs including a QC process to monitor results.
  10. Use a cloud based mobile data collection technology to ensure consistency of capture, efficient reporting and cross-functional team collaboration.
